This webinar is the first in a series of webinars regarding the “Movement for Requesting Action to Remedy the Gender Gap in the Patent Bar”.  To kick off the series, this experienced panel of patent practitioners will examine the gender gap in the patent bar and its correlation to the STEM degree requirement; discuss the qualifications for prosecuting design patents; review the letter from Senators Hirono, Coons, and Tillis to the USPTO and the USPTO’s response, and explore ways to increase diversity among patent agents.

Michelle Bugbee is a Senior Counsel in the Intellectual Property group of Eastman Chemical Company in the Springfield, MA office supporting the Advanced Interlayers business.  Michelle has over 20 years of patent experience in the chemical industry and with sporting goods.  Prior to attending law school, Michelle worked for over ten years in various engineering and supervisory roles.  Michelle is currently a co-chair of the IPO Women in IP committee as well as a co-chair of the Women Inventors subcommittee of the Women in IP committee and assisted in the development of IPO’s Gender Diversity in Innovation Toolkit (launched in September 2019).

Andrea Evensen is Lead IP Counsel for Siemens Digital Industries, Software (DI SW).  Her intellectual property law practice focuses on global intellectual property management of technology-focused software companies located throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.  She counsels clients on every aspect of intellectual property, including, inter alia, patent prosecution, strategy, freedom-to-operate/invalidity/risk/clearance analyses, licensing and other IP-related and commercial transactions, research & development agreements, inbound and outbound technology license and transfer agreements, mergers & acquisitions, due diligence, acquired company integration, intellectual property-focused training, invention brainstorming/harvesting, pending/threatened litigations, copyright, and trademark protection.  Her litigation experience includes district court practice, appellate court practice, and arbitrations involving, inter alia, patent infringement, misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair competition, false advertising, fraud, and breach of contract. As a registered U.S. patent attorney, Ms. Evensen’s patent prosecution experience expands into broad areas of technology such as computer, Internet, mechanical, and medical arts as well as business methods.  She has published a number of articles, given multiple presentations, and has received numerous awards and recognitions, including multiple Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Star recognitions from the Illinois Super Lawyers publication.
